The teacher goes on to explain that children who can name and understand their feelings are better able to handle the ups and downs of childhood. ![]() Her story begins with the introduction of the Colour Monster (we turn the page and discover the narrator’s a little girl): Llenas’s art is so expressive - childlike in its simplicity and sheer exuberance, with intensely scribbled crayon marks and wild brush strokes. ![]() (Come to think of it, he does resemble Oscar the Grouch with that big, animated monobrow!) You know, the kind you’d find inhabiting Sesame Street. A book about feelings - and colours - it features a friendly, fuzzy monster. The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas (Templar 2016) is described by Book Trust as ‘ eceptively simple, surprisingly powerful and satisfyingly reassuring’. One of the many benefits of picture books is that they can enable children to find ways - and words - to help them express what’s going on inside. My Good to Read this week is a fantastic example of a book that does just that - in a gentle and entertaining way. ![]() Young children, in particular, may not have the words to describe how they’re feeling (which is why they end up having tantrums). The closer they get to where the clan is held captive, the more challenging things become. He survives and begins to develop his own powers as they return to the road. If she doesn’t he’s certainly going to die. That results in her making a frightening choice and giving him Amrit. Not only must she cloak them, the vehicle and the cabin with invisibility, she has to save Miles’ life. ![]() When Miles is shot and they have to hide from his father as well as the group that Whit, former shaman of the clan, is working with, Juneau is tested. I am not sure I loved any of the characters. And every time I thought I had figured out what the major conflict of the book would be, I was wrong. So, the book is told in alternating 1st and 3rd person, which was weird for me at first, but it worked. Yes, me, the QUEEN OF SPOILERS, is telling you to go in blind. I will say, this book is best if you go in blind. I can’t even really explain this book because I’m not sure I will ever be done ‘processing’ this book. And everything in my perfect world broke apart.
