5/29/2023 0 Comments The Haunting of L by Howard Norman![]() ![]() I confess that various movies came to mind as I was reading Howard Norman's novel ''The Haunting of L.,'' the conclusion to his Canadian trilogy, which also includes ''The Bird Artist'' and ''The Museum Guard.'' ''Crash,'' ''Blowup,'' ''McCabe and Mrs. ![]() Genet was perhaps the last great modern writer with an unbroken faith in crime as art and vice versa, but even he was hardly unaware of how sexy his prisoners looked in their chains, enacting beautiful tableaus of transgression by the sea. It's an open question, however, whether or not readers or writers can still truly believe in such a thing. ![]() In our sexually and psychologically overexposed cultural moment, one might well wish for an art that draws real blood, a sin of art or passion that can't be forgiven. Confession is a romantic form, not least because it presupposes that sin is still possible. ![]()
